Visitors of all ages are invited to join us Saturday, April 15th from 9 AM-12 PM at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm for our annual Spring Planting Day. Stop by to learn about the different types of plants that would have been important to the farm family and how they would have prepared their spring garden. We’ll have a variety of demonstrations throughout the Farm including cooking, planting, activities for children, and more!
The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway, SC. For more information, call the L. W. The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the PBS Film Series Rebels & Redcoats: The Shot Heard Round the World.
“With vivid dramatizations of battles, eyewitness accounts, original documents and paintings, Rebels & Redcoats tells the untold story of the American Revolution. Richard Holmes, a renowned British military historian, presents the series. He focuses on the military struggles, soldiers, leaders, and tactics of this great conflict. It is told from an unusual point of view, that of the British losers. Yet it also explores painful conflicts within the American people themselves.”
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, April 19th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Join us for free 30 minute Saturday activities at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for a half hour session between 9 AM-11 AM. Group sizes will be limited to help ensure social distancing. On April 22nd we’ll celebrate Earth Day by making ‘seed bombs’! These special seed packages can be thrown anywhere and are packed with seeds that will help attract pollinators.

The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the documentary, Nothing to Prove: Mac Arnold Returns to the Blues. Southpaw bassist and South Carolina native Mac Arnold was only ten years old when he and his brother built a guitar out of a gas can, a couple strips of wood, a handful of nails, and some screen wire. Arnold played in J. Floyd & the Shamrocks (who frequently featured a young James Brown on piano) while still in high school, and officially began his professional career when he joined Charles Miller’s band in the early '60s. He moved to Chicago around 1965 and began working with saxophonist A.C. Reed before hooking up with Muddy Waters and his band in 1966. The Waters stint led to a fair amount of studio work, and Arnold played bass on several 1960s blues albums, including Otis Spann’s The Blues Is Where It’s At and John Lee Hooker’s Live at Cafe Au Go Go. By the 1980s Arnold had tired of the road and moved back to South Carolina, settling in his hometown of Pelzer, where for all practical purposes he retired from the music business. A group of local musicians kept after him to start performing again, though, which led to Arnold eventually fronting his own band, Mac Arnold & Plate Full o’ Blues.

Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Stop by the McCown Auditorium at 1 PM on April 29th to learn more about some of the wildlife of the Carolina Bays with Horry County Museum Curator Abigail Geedy.
Abigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant and moved into the Curator position in 2022.

The 2023 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Barbecue & Homecooking: Food That Makes You Smile. This documentary was made to promote folklore and folklife experiences visitors might have in the economically depressed four-counties of the Region III SC National Heritage Corridor. These counties bear primary roots to the beginnings and growth of barbecue in South Carolina. This film explores eateries where the cooks heading up the kitchens or barbecue pits have agrarian family roots and were first taught on wood stoves or by the side of heralded barbecue pit-men. They maintain today’s recipes with ingredients and cooking methods learned at the side of mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles or grandparents in these farming communities. Music by South Carolina roots musicians moves the viewer along as they hit the road with filmmaker Stan Woodward and the folklorist from McKissick Museum as they ‘root-out’ these sites.
