Active Adult Series: What’s in a Name?

The monthly Active Adult Series at the Horry County Museum will continue on September 17th at 1:00 PM with the program, “What’s in a Name?”. Join us as we explore the stories behind the sometimes unusual names of familiar and unfamiliar places in Horry County. The Active Adult Series is held the third Tuesday of each month and is perfect for new residents to the area, or lifetime locals who want to learn more about the place that they call home.
The program will be held at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street, Conway SC. This series is free and open to the public, seating will be available. Backstage Pass

The 2019 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Backstage Pass.  This hour long film, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV, goes behind the scenes of some of the biggest shows in Myrtle Beach, giving a glimpse into the theatrical production process at places such as Legends in Concert, The Carolina Opry, The Palace Theatre, the Alabama Theatre and Medieval Times.

The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 18th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Junior Farmers at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm

Experience life on the one-horse family farm from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Junior Farmers is a free, family friendly program open to children ages 5-10 and focuses on the traditions and workings of an early 1900s farm family. Join us on September 21st from 9:00 AM-10:00 AM to learn how corn becomes grits! Children will help harvest and shell corn, see the grist mill in operation and help sift grits and corn meal. Christine Vernon: Pirate Legends Along the South Carolina Coast

The Horry County Museum and the Athenaeum Press at CCU present a program by ‘The Pirate Lady’, Christine Vernon, on Saturday, September 21st.

Vernon will share the history and legends of pirates along the South Carolina coast during the Golden Age of Piracy from 1670-1720. Join us for stories of well-known pirates like Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet, Anne Bonny, Mary Read and our local legendary favorite, Drunken Jack.  

Christine Vernon was born and raised in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA where she studied both fine art and theater. She moved to Murrells Inlet, SC in 2005 where she began studying the local history and legends of the Carolina Coast, specifically the South Strand area. With this knowledge, in 2015, she created Miss Chris' Inlet Walking Tour. Christine invites the public to walk along with her on the Murrells Inlet Marsh Walk as she regales the tales of ghosts, pirates as well as local history and conservation efforts on the Inlet.
