The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a free traditional bluegrass concert by The Morris Brothers on Saturday, April 17th, at 1:00 PM. The Morris Brothers have been playing music together for 49 years. Originally from West Virginia, they now reside in the Aynor/Cool Springs area of South Carolina. The brothers started playing bluegrass when they were young boys growing up in the hollows of West Virginia. They enjoy playing bluegrass music and bluegrass gospel and play regularly in Horry County. Band members include Mike Morris of Aynor, SC on vocals and banjo, Matt Morris from Cool Springs, SC on vocals and guitar, William Hardee from Loris, SC on vocals and fiddle, Jason Todd from Loris, SC on mandolin, and Tammy Holt of Conway, SC on the bass.

The 2021 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with G-Man: The Rise & Fall of Melvin Purvis, part of the Carolina Stories Series by SCETV. The name, Melvin Horace Purvis, to many people today, means nothing. But it was not so long ago that Purvis was a household name, and over 260,000 boys and girls were digging through boxes of Post Toasties breakfast cereal to get their very own decoder rings and Junior G-Man badges. Purvis, the Timmonsville native with the unassuming name, skyrocketed to such fame in the 1930s as leader of the FBI team that took down some of the biggest gangsters of his day, including John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson and Pretty Boy Floyd. His death in 1960 is still shrouded in mystery. Was it a suicide, as first reported? Was it an accidental shooting? Or was there something more sinister behind it?
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, April 21st, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.

Join us for free 30 minute Saturday activities at the Farm! Parents can sign children up for one of four half hour sessions starting at 9 AM. Group sizes will be limited to 5 children per session to help ensure social distancing. On April 24th, children will learn about some of the common vegetables grown on the family farm and will start a mini garden using egg cartons.

Did you know that the Carolina Bays in Horry County are the only place in South Carolina you can find Venus Fly Traps growing wild? Carolina Bays are elliptical depressions housing temporary wetlands surrounded by sandy rims. The origin of these dense and marshy depressions have been debated since being brought into the scientific spotlight thanks to aerial photography of the Myrtle Beach area in the 1930s. What isn’t up for debate is the unique and familiar wildlife that call the Carolina Bays home, including multiple species of carnivorous plants. Stop by the McCown Auditorium at 1 PM on April 24th to learn more about some of the wildlife of the Carolina Bays with Horry County Museum Technical Assistant Abigail Geedy.
Abigail Geedy was born and raised in south-central Pennsylvania and moved to South Carolina for college in 2012. She has both an Anthropology Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree and a Graduate Certificate of Museum Management from the University of South Carolina. She began volunteering in museums in 2011 and had worked in curation at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology for the last 5 years. In 2020, she joined the Horry County Museum as a Technical Assistant.

Have you ever wondered how laundry was done before modern washing machines? Visit the L.W. Paul Living History Farm to try your hand at doing laundry the old fashioned way on April 27th from 9 AM until 12 PM and see how clothes would have been cleaned using a scrub board and wash pot.
The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family from 1900-1955. The Horry County Museum will screen Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection Saturday, May 1st at 1 PM. Part of the SCETV Carolina Stories Series, Beyond Barbados traces the historic influence of the small island of Barbados on the wealth and success of a place 2,000 miles away: the Carolinas. Scholars examine the cultural exchange that impacted the development of language, food and architecture, and recount how the economic and governmental systems created, tested and proven by the West Indies sugar industry forged the prosperity and power of the Carolinas – chief among them the institution of slavery.
